Winner of AIM for Climate and Enterprise Neurosystem Grand Challenge to be Awarded Kove:SDM Software-Defined Memory

April 17, 2023 — The winner of the AIM for Climate Grand Challenge: Leveraging the Power of AI and Machine-Learning will receive a prize pool worth more than $5 million dollars to accelerate their work, including the breakthrough Kove:SDM technology enabling more powerful AI/ML. The prize pool also includes IBM cloud credits, IBM Ventures mentorship, Red Hat RHODS AI development platform and Equinix metal credits, in addition to access to Kove:SDM to maximize the performance of their people and infrastructure.

“We’re proud to be supporting the AIM for Climate Grand Challenge,” says John Overton, CEO of Kove® and the Vice Chair of Enterprise Neurosystem, a research community of leading academic institutions and chief scientists of America’s top technology companies. “Our ultimate goal is to facilitate the development of a large-scale AI network for climate change monitoring and analysis to help increase and accelerate climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation.”

Enterprise Neurosystem is hosting the challenge in conjunction with the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), a partnership of 47 governments and hundreds of non-governmental organizations jointly led by the US Department of Agriculture and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). AIM for Climate seeks to drive more rapid and transformative climate action in the agricultural sector, empowering agriculture to be part of the solution to address the climate crisis, build resilience to its impacts, and create co-benefits of climate action.

“We believe that our challenge will help sustainably increase agricultural productivity and incomes, while reducing if not removing greenhouse emissions,” adds Overton. “To help ensure success, the winners will also get one-on-one access to the Enterprise Neurosystem team of experts for AI development knowledge, assistance on their projects, and introductions to potential funding partners.”

A pitch competition among the finalists will be held at the AIM for Climate Summit, May 8-10, 2023, in Washington DC, with the winners to be announced. A report of the outcomes will be delivered at COP28, Dubai, UAE, to be held between November 30, 2023 and December 12, 2023.

“AI/ML can be a powerful tool in developing programs that aid in mitigating climate change, alleviating poverty and adopting climate-smart agricultural practices,” says Overton. “This will particularly help the small family farmers, especially women, and communities from low- and middle-income countries since they are most susceptible to the negative effects of climate change.”

Kove:SDM is a breakthrough technology that enables individual servers to draw from a common memory pool, including amounts far larger than could be contained within a physical server, so the user can provision resources to the model rather than forcing models to fit fixed resources in AI/ML applications.

About AIM for Climate

The Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) is a voluntary global initiative that unites participants in support of a common goal: to significantly increase investment in and support for climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation over five years (2021-2025) to address global hunger, food security, and climate change. Led by the United States of America (U.S.) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), AIM for Climate has united 47 governments and more than 275 non-governmental partners since it was launched at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). AIM for Climate government partners provide the crucial foundation of the initiative through a wave of new public investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation. But other sectors, including business, philanthropy, and other non-government partners, are invited to build upon that foundation with innovation sprints – investments in specific, impactful, expedited efforts – or by providing critical knowledge for identifying investment gaps, challenges and opportunities for collaboration.
